The functions of this 2 herb formula is to warm the lungs and strengthen the stomach. The formula is best suited for conditions of lung atrophy due to deficiency cold of both the stomach and the lungs. The atrophy is from deficiency of yang Qi which prevents the yang from reaching the limbs.

Zhi Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis, Licorice Root)

- 12g. -tonify Qi, aids stomach

Gan Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Officinalis, Dried Ginger Rhizome, Ginger)

- 6g. -warms lungs, disperses cold, aids yang Qi

This Herbal formula is not only good to treat deficiency cold in the lungs and stomach but is also used to treat spleen and stomach deficiency with bleeding due to spleen yang deficiency. Gan Cao Gan Jiang Tang is used in many other formulas as a pair to treat many similar disorders. Two formulas where these herbs are used is Li Zhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill) and Si Ni Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction). When the appropriate symptoms are present this Herbal formula has been used to treat such diseases as enuresis, peptic ulcer, chronic gastritis, emphysema and recurrent epistaxis.
