The functions of this TCM Herbal formula are to regulate and harmonize both the Qi and blood while clearing heat and toxicity. The formula is best suited in conditions here there is damp heat stagnated within the intestines causing Qi and blood to also stagnate. Bai ShaoYao (Radix Paeoniae Lactiflorae, White Peony Root)

- 15 -20g. -regultaes ying Qi and blood, relieves abdominal pain

Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Chinese Angelica Root, Tang -kuei)

- 6 -9g. -regulates ying Qi and blood

Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis, Licorice Root)

- 4.5g. -relieves abdominal pain, regulates stomach, harmonizes middle jiao

Mu Xiang (Radix Aucklandiae Lappae, Costus Root, Saussurea, Aucklandia)

- 4.5g. -regulates Qi, eliminates stagnation

Bing Lang (Semen Arecae Catechu, Betel Nut, Areca Seeds)

- 4.5g. -regulates Qi, eliminates stagnation

Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis, Coptis Rhizoma)

Cooking Preparation of Shao Yao Tang
This natural medicine Herbal formula should be prepared by grinding all ingredients into a coarse powder. The powder should be taken in 15 gram doses as a draft after meals. Guan Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi Loureiroi) is usually taken out of the formula and replaced with Rou Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae, Cinnamon Bark)

This Herbal formula is able to treat bloody and pusy stools by regulating the Qi and moving the blood, once this happens the diarrhea will be alleviated (treating the root to alleviate the branch). This formula has been used primarily for disorders of dysentery caused by damp heat while Bai Tou Weng Tang (Pulsatilla Decoction) is used predominantly for dysenteric disorders caused by toxic heat scalding the stomach and intestines. Damp heat dysentery will have equal amounts of blood and pus in the patients stools while toxic heat gives rise to excessive amounts of blood and less amounts of pus. This alternative medicine formula has been used to treat such disorders as amebic dysentery, bacillary dysentery, acute enteritis and ulcerative colitis when the appropriate symptoms are present.
