The functions of the TCM Large Intestine (colon)

The main function of the Large Intestine is to receive food and drink from the Small Intestine, absorb some nutrients and fluids, and excrete the waste in the form of stools. This closely correlate with western medicine.

The Lungs and Large Intestine are interiorly/exteriorly related Yin and Yang paired organs. The Lungs descend Qi to the Large Intestine to give it the energy needed to defecate.

This is displayed when Lung Qi is deficient and constipation ensues. This is very common in the elderly. Conversely, if there is constipation, the Lungs descending function is impaired. This can cause breathlessness, and hypertension.

“When the Large Intestine is deficient, one dreams of open fields.” (Spiritual Axis).
