Stye

Stye

A Stye is a blocked gland of the eye lid found at the base of the eye lashes.  When this gland is blocked an infection occurs creating redness, tenderness, swelling and pain of the effected area.  In some cases there will be excessive tearing (lacrimation) a sensation to light (photophobia) and a sensation of a lumb or foreign body on the eye or eye lid.

A Stye is similar to that of a Chalazion but are generally smaller, less painful and do not produce lasting damage.  Chalazions are generally chronic while styes are more acute.
