Blood Deficiency - Low Platelet Count

Platelet deficiency

Blood platelet deficiency is called idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) which can cause easy bruising.   There are 2 types of platelet deficiency, primary and secondary.  In the primary cause the bone marrow produces platelets at a normal rate but they are removed from the blood too soon.  In secondary ITP the bone marrow does not produce enough platelets.  In the secondary platelet deficiency there will also be a deficiency of red and white blood cells.

It is important to be diagnosed by a western doctor to properly suggest treatment as this can become a severe disorder.  Easily bruising and bleeding are the most common symptoms of having a blood platelet deficiency.

Western treatment of this condition often involves the use of corticosteroids to help produce more platelets as well as possibly removal of the spleen.  The spleen would be removed because this is the organ which removes platelets from the blood (via anti-platelet antibodies).
