Chest Pain

 

Chest pain may be caused by a serious condition such as heart disease which needs to be diagnosed by a trained medical practitioner.  Although some cases of chest pain may be serious other conditions may not.  In non-serious conditions,  herbal therapy can be a great treatment method to decrease and possibly cure this pain.  

 

Principle of treatment is to rescue Yang: Use Fu Zi, Gui Zhi, Hong Hua, Tao Ren to boost Yang and warm King Fire

Herbal Formula: Si Ni Tang, with Tao Ren, Hong Hua


Types of Chest Pain:


Phlegm Accumulation:

Phegm accumulation may cause chest pain which is accompanied by  cough with white or clear phlegm and possible gurgling sounds in the throat.  There will be general signs of pressure in the chest and possible pain which doesn't move.  Certain foods such as dairy or raw veggetables may aggravate this condition. These patients may be over weight, experience bloating, dizziness and fatigue. 

Herbal Medicine Formula: Gua Lou Xie Bai Ban Xia Tang

 

Phlegm Heat 

This condition is similar to that as the above pattern of chesst pain but has more heat type signs and symptoms.  There may be a hot sensation in the chest along with pressure or distention.  The phlegm which is coughed up will be thick and yellow.  The patients cheeks will be red and may experience palpitations.  

Herbal Medicine Formula: Di Dan Tang

 

Phlegm Wind 

Wind phlegm chest pain has pressure or distention in the chest accompanied by dizziness and numbness.  There is a cough with thick or watery phlegm and other signs and symptoms of phlegm accumulation.  

Herbal Medicine Formula: Ban Xia Bai Zhu Tian Ma Tang

 

Blood Stasis Chest Pain:

This is a severe type of chest pain which has a stabbing and fixed nature.  It is more of a chronic type of pain which gets worse at night.  There is commonly dark skin of the face or an ashen complexion.   They will have palpitations and possibly dry skin and insomnia.  

Herbal Medicine Formula: Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang

 

Phlegm Fire Stagnated In The Chest:

Burning chest pain accompanied by extreme thirst, insomnia, bitter taste in the mouth, rough inspiration, irritability, fever, constipation, red face and dark yellow urination which may be painful.  The patient will have yellow or dark thick phlegm being coughed up and a constant hot pressure within the chest.

Cold Stagnation InThe Chest:

Chest pain which is acute and radiates to the back.  It is aggravated by cold weather or sudden changes in temperature.  This type of patient will generally feel cold, sweat easily or have a cold sweat and palpitations.  

Herbal Medicine Formula: Dang Gui Si Ni Tang

 

Heart Qi Deficiency:

Non severe, mild chest pain or discomfort.  This type of chest pain is accompanied by a shortness of breath, palpitations, fatigue, pale face and possible low blood pressure.  

Herbal Medicine Formula: Bao Yuan Tang

 

Heart Yin deficiency:

As with the above pattern, this type of chest pain  is mild or dull.  The pain is warm or "flushing" of heat type which is worse at night. The patient will commonly get palpitations, night sweats, hot hands and feet kicking the blankets off their feet during the night and insomnia.  They will also have malar flush (red cheeks).  This type of chest pain will be aggravated by alcohol such as red wine.

Qi Stagnation in the Chest:

Dull and moving chest pain which is made worse by emotional stress.  The pain may radiate from a feeling of something stuck in the throat to wandering areas within the chest.  There will also be irritability or emotional outbursts, pressure under the ribs, possible digestive problems, ....
